Human factors – expirience prototyping with brushes

Posted in 1 by monzerius on March 14, 2010

This exercise was based on experience prototyping were in the lesson were we took on various tasks in which we would analyze the user’s every action from start to finish on how they would go about combing /brushing there hair. We set up different scenarios such as creating a prototype bathroom an undergoing your daily bathroom routine up to the point where you would start combing your hair, also we used different styles of brushes and we used empathy tools such as goggles and biker gloves to impaired our senses this was to see how we would interact with the brush differently I found this exercise quite useful into giving us more insights on human factors and considerations using empathy tools

In need of a shave that day

Design museum-ergonomics exhibit

Posted in 1 by monzerius on March 8, 2010

A couple weeks back I took a trip to the design museum to see the exhibit Ergonomics real design. www.realdesign.org This was based on the study of human factors, human centered design and ergonomics that seek to match the task and equipment to rather then the other way round ,the three main topics mostly covered in the exhibition were physical ergonomics ( how the body works ) psychological ergonomics (how the body works ) and organizational ergonomics (how companies and societies work). The exhibit shows examples of each from your everyday consumer and household products to critical systems and transport. Something that caught my eye that I found very inspiring was the BLOODHOUND SSC Cockpit test rig this was designed by the product design students from the University of West England. They were approached by the team behind the rocket and jet powered BLOODHOUND SSC land speed to build a test rig to study the layout of the cockpit including the position of the controls and drivers seat, the objective was to provide the driver with safety & a position were he is able to see clearly and access the controls easily I especially like the way the design is made to withstand the G-force and enables the driver to maximize his comfort.

Decode exhibit digital and interactive design

Another interesting exhibit I went to couple weeks back was the (DECODE) at the V&A museum http://www.vam.ac.uk/exhibitions/future_exhibs/Decode/ which was a interactive and a digital theme showing the developements in interactive design, the were digital motion sensors and graphics installations all sorts of different digital arts from various international artist and designs the thing that capture me the most is that unlike other galleries were you may just stand and observe a still painting or sculpture these were ever changing structures which took different forms and patterns it also most was seen as a growth in the work as if the digital pieces had a mind of there own.

British museum- expirience prototyping

Posted in 1 by monzerius on January 25, 2010

Earlier this week i took a trip down to the british museum with a couple colleagues from my product design class and our lecturer were we undertook the task of doing some self expirience prototyping .Our first task was to get in pairs and one of us would as a public member oblivious to their surroundings looking for a specific artifact were as the other would record their journey finding it and and any alternative actions taken on the way.

entering the museum, its quite a busy atmoshere school children also rushing in and out the main entrance doors it was almost kaos trying to get to the main information desk but sayin that the subject did sneak pass an avoid waiting for a bag search haha.

Once reachin the information desk our subject rebecca looked up the location of the exhibit on the map in which she would find item for this task ( Conan dancing mask) we then proceeded on to find the exhibit number

Rebecca found the exhibit (living and dieing) very easily once looking were she had to go on the map as she entered the room she was confronted with an information key showing her the different section of culture around the room

After briefly scanning the info hub she casualy walked round examing the pieces when wait ooooohhhh I think shes found the winning item shes looking for.

After searching high and low through the many categories of mask Becca really couldn’t find the item chosen in the objective she had a slight feeling she had already found the mask but were as the was no title, tags or information she remained oblivious to it until we were confronted by our lecturer who pointed us in the right direction which turned out to be Becca’s original hunch well done good observation.

Our 2nd task focusing on experience prototyping was to change over the roles in our pairs this is were i took the task of wearing a set of biker gloves and sunglasses to slightly impair my abilities which gives an understanding of how users other then ourselves would interact in different scenarios i.e. touch points , physical actions

Looking like a complete Muppet in my mixed up attire I walked around trying to find the main information desk so I could get a map to point me in the right direction but even then when I found it I had troubles trying to pick up and hold objects such as the map and my phone this regarded the position of things and the thickness of the gloves i was wearing.

I traveled the circular pathway looking out for the exhibit sign number which was quite distracting as I had the sun glasses on which slightly made them less visible to see clearly , I then approach the exhibit looking around i felt as if it would be a strain on my eyes as the gallery was quite open and the pieces were very spread out all over and as I’m quite impatience I couldn’t be asked to take my time looking in every section so i called upon one of the gallery workers to help me find the location of the piece i was searching for.

Our final task was to switch up the roles and we not only had the user and people making records we had subjects to intervene with the users experience ,which basically was product design to interact with the user making the experience in the museum a much more positive and productive journey ,were as sometimes you just want to go in the museum and look for something specific or require information from a source but cannot allocate it this is were the people who were intervening came in and would help the user and guild them to their location and provide them with anything which come of interest on the way

User centered designed

User centered designed (UCD) is a design philosophy which mainly focused on the users needs, and how they are interface with a design.UCD analyzes the characteristics foreseeing the behavior and interaction of actual users so basically we as designers our giving ourselves the challenge of becoming one with the consumer assuming how a first time consumer would interface with a product these design experiences gives us an insight on what learning curves the user may come across.

The (KR 5 arc) robotic arm is designed by Industrial designer Mario Selic who contributes his work to KUKA Automation + Robotics team this is a leading German company .This robot arm is at the lower end of the a range of different robots produced by KUKA . Its payload of 5kg makes it well-suited to standard arc welding tasks. Also its attractive price and compact dimensions, makes it an ideal choice mounted to the floor or above the arm still performs the task accurately well.

Its also Suitable for these applications: arc welding, other welding purposes, soldering, painting, surface treatment, other applications.

It amazing the amounts of tasks and job robots are capable of in our current society but the idea of robots entering the workforce has scared people for quite some time as robots require rest or holidays and also once programmed do not need to be trained which is cost efficient this all works around the economy which will increased unemployment.

The arm of the ‘Picasso robot’ seen painting cars on an assembly line in a Citröen advert is to be used to treat cancer patients now.The cyberknife takes X-rays that can pinpoint minuscule tumours around the body and take camera shots of your insides.

These shoes were another piece at the the design real exhibit what caught my eye about these shoes was its interesting and innovative style which seem so familiar but then after reading the info chart on them i had recognized the designers style Zaha hadid the shapes and patterns used are something science-fiction like they take the forms of morphed & irregular structures which gives her work characteristics these shoes were also manufactured by Melissa Plastic Dreams which is a Brazilian footwear company the material its made from is

<a

Wow seasons greetings all and happy new year sorry i havent been in touch i had to dust off the cob webs from the blog aand start the new year properly. A couple weeks back i attended an exhibition at the sepentine gallery in hyde park called (Design real) this exhibit was quite open & interactive which gave a different feel to your classical museum visit allot of the pieces their were products of todays society. Some pruducts their i found functioned and manufactured quite well and had a good use of materials some i could'nt say the same for.

I liked the armour piece (Wave-V 2 Neck Jacket) its manufactured by dainese and the materials used were polyethylene, nylon this is a motocycle suit which specialises in back protection the back protector was 1st design for MotoGP racers and world class skiers the idea is a spinal shell which is influence from an armadilo which when it drops is protected by its shell the shape and design is very innovative and has been biomechanicaly engineered to offered good ergonomics and protection

Online Presence

As the weeks have gone on i found myself tackling the countless codes of Adobe dream weaver so i could integrate as many flash functions as possible to build up my online portfolio which hasn’t been the easiest of task some days I’ve really just found myself sitting their puzzled listening to those really annoying online tutorials on how to apply a adobe flash feature to my work.Despite the confusing parts of web design i quite enjoyed the design process ,coming up with the ideas and concepts for the page i found my self really pushing the creative boundaries some ideas were really out of the box that due to the time scale i was not able to pursue them any further in my final design

This is a development idea for for web design home page
